Platelet Rich Plasma Injections WHAT IS IT

Platelet Rich Plasma or at is affectionately called “Blood Spinning” is the newest procedure in the Sports Medicine Physicians arsenal. While this procedure has been used in the dental field for many years it has only become available as an office procedure in Sports Medicine over the last couple of years.
The procedure initially involves taking a specific amount of blood. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge and spun down into layers. The platelet poor plasma is withdrawn and we are left with a small portion of platelet rich plasma.

Are Multiple Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Useful for Treatment of Chronic Patellar Tendinopathy in Athletes?: A Prospective Study - Τενοντίτιδα επιγονατιδικού τένοντα

Christophe Charousset, Amine Zaoui, Laurence Bellaiche, Benjamin Bouyer
American Journal of Sports Medicine 2014 February 11
BACKGROUND:Chronic patellar tendinopathy (PT) is one of the most common overuse knee disorders. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) appears to be a reliable nonoperative therapy for chronic PT. PURPOSE:To evaluate clinical and radiological outcomes of 3 consecutive ultrasound (US)-guided PRP injections for the treatment of chronic PT in athletes. STUDY DESIGN:Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS:A total of 28 athletes (17 professional, 11 semiprofessional) with chronic PT refractory to nonoperative management were prospectively included for US-guided pure PRP injections into the site of the tendinopathy.

Knee osteoarthritis: hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma or both in association?

Expert Opin Biol Ther. 2014 Feb 17. [Epub ahead of print]

Introduction: Bidirectional interactions between cells and fluidic surroundings regulate cellular functions and maintain tissue or organ architecture. Accordingly, the synovial fluid is the primary source of environmental signals and determines to a great extent the molecular interactions within the joint capsule, both in homeostasis and pathology.

Sacroiliitis – A Common Cause of Back Pain & Sciatica - Άλγος ιερολαγονίου

Sacroiliitis The sacroiliac joint is formed at the borders of the sacrum and the hip (pelvic) bones – the iliac crests. This is a long vertical joint, about the length of the side of your hand. This joint is held together by multiple ligaments, with many nerve pain fibers contained in these ligaments. The sacrum is at the base of the spine and is subject to a great deal of stress.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

The use of autologous (donor and recipient are the same) blood products [Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP)] in an effort to aid in healing via a variety of treatments has become more common.  In recent years, science and technology has provided a new perspective on understanding the wound healing process.  Platelets were once thought to act only with clotting, however, we now know platelets also release many bioactive proteins responsible for removal of necrotic tissue as well as enhancing tissue regeneration.

It’s working for Olympians and star athletes — could PRP help you?

The Sochi Winter Olympics are upon us, and I am psyched. Like so many of you, I really enjoy watching the competition and rooting for Team USA.
We’ve already seen Team USA lose one of the giants in skiing — Lindsey Vonn — due to a terrible fall. Preparing for these games gives way too many stories of Olympic dreams lost or delayed due to injury. In recent years, there’s been growing interest in a new treatment that could have a profound impact on you.

Does Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Really Work?

by Dr. Brian Halpern
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) continues to be the buzz when treating various musculoskeletal problems. It stimulates the body’s healing response for tissue repair at the site of injury. While the best applications so far are for chronic tendinosis and osteoarthritis, a recent national orthopaedic meeting presented even more positive studies on the effect of PRP in arthritis.

Enhancing meniscal repair through biology: platelet-rich plasma as an alternative strategy - Ρήξη μηνισκού

Instr Course Lect. 2011;60:453-60.
 Delos D, Rodeo SA.
Meniscal tears are common orthopaedic injuries that can manifest with significant pain and mechanical symptoms. The treatment of meniscal tears has evolved from total meniscectomy to partial meniscectomy and meniscal repair. Preserving the meniscus is ideal because the loss of any portion of the meniscus can lead to significantly increased articular cartilage contact stresses compared with the intact state. However, most of the meniscus has a limited ability to heal because of poor vascularity.

Running Doc: Surgery is not always the best option for repairing a damaged meniscus - Ρήξη μηνισκού

Dear Running Doc: I am 43 years old and run 35 miles a week. I do five half marathons and two marathons a year. For the last year I've had an ach once in a while on the outside of my left knee: no swelling, and no specific injury.
I went to my local orthopedic surgeon who ordered an MRI which showed a lateral meniscus tear. He said I need surgery. Do I need surgery? I can run and it only bothers me very infrequently.
Is there anything else I can do? R. H. Great Neck, NY.

The Running Doc discusses the merits of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy

Dear Running Doc:
My doctor suggested PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy for my back pain. Is this a mainstream practice yet? I know insurance doesn't cover it yet. I just want to understand the process more. Please help. Victor K. Port Washington, NY
Victor: Most sports medicine physicians now consider PRP injections as major an advance in sports medicine as the MRI. I write about PRP injections all the time since they are now available to everyone.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Meniscal Tears - Ρήξη μηνισκού

In this article Marc Darrow, MD explains the use of PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Meniscal Tears.
A patient will come in to an examination. He/she will report that they are thinking of a partial meniscectomy because that will help save their knee and aleviate the symptoms.
The meniscus or menisci are the thick, strong, cartilage-like shock absorbers that cushion and pad the knee between the thigh (femur) and shin (tibia) bones. Shaped like the letter “C,” the meniscus of each knee provides stability in carrying the weight of the body or in gliding through the knee’s many range of motions.
