ΡΗΞΗ ΜΗΝΙΣΚΟΥ

Official Study: “A novel hypothesis: The application of platelet-rich plasma can promote the clinical healing of white-white meniscal tears”

New hope for healing a torn meniscus in Platelet Rich Plasma therapy

A torn meniscus is a knee condition that affects a wide range of people, including athletes who experienced a twisting blow to the outside of their knee, or someone who had wear and tear from aging. The knee has 2 menisci, (medial and lateral), which are c-shaped and made of cartilage and help provide stability, shock absorption, weight bearing and lubrication to the knee joint. A white-white tear is when there is a tear of the meniscus in an area with no blood vessels, and therefore, no blood supply to aid in healing.

Traditional methods of treatment for a torn meniscus used to mean surgery, but that has been proven to lead to increased rates degeneration and early osteoarthritis. It is easy to see that a better way to treat a torn meniscus needs to be found. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a technique that has been used to treat common musculoskeletal injuries such as tennis elbow and tendon tears. In PRP, platelets from the patient’s own blood are concentrated and injected into the problem site, often under ultrasound guidance. PRP has many growth factors that have been shown to aid in healing. Research has shown that the growth factors in the PRP can promote blood vessel growth, and researchers hope that it will also work in the area of the white-white tear. The lack of a good blood supply is often the limiting factor in meniscus healing and PRP might be that bridge to facilitate recovery. Research is currently being done to see if PRP therapy will help promote the healing of white-white meniscal tears so a patient can avoid surgery and get back to doing the activities they love.
