Abstract

PURPOSE:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from centrifuging whole blood to obtain a high platelet concentration containing numerous growth factors. Despite its widespread use, there is still a lack of high-level evidence regarding randomized clinical trials assessing the efficacy of PRP in treating ligament injuries. Although there is research showing an improvement in the early stages of healing in the animal model of acute medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury of the knee, there is no strong evidence to support the efficacy of PRP injections for treating MCL lesions in humans.

Use of an antifibrotic agent improves the effect of platelet-rich plasma on muscle healing after injury.

BACKGROUND:

Muscle contusions are a common type of muscle injury and are frequently encountered in athletes and military personnel. Although these injuries are capable of healing in most instances, incomplete functional recovery often occurs because of the development of fibrosis in the muscle. We hypothesized that a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and oral administration of losartan (an antifibrotic agent) could enhance muscle healing by stimulating muscle regeneration and angiogenesis and by preventing fibrosis in contusion-injured skeletal muscle.

Stem Cells May Help Some With Avascular Necrosis (AVN)

2013 /PRNewswire/
Stem cells have long been touted as the next big thing. Well just maybe, it is here.  According to Dr. Dennis Lox, some patients with a disorder of the bone called avascular necrosis (AVN), have turned to stem cell therapy for aid. Avascular necrosis (AVN) also referred to as osteonecrosis or ischemic necrosis, is a condition in which the blood supply to the bone becomes disrupted, leading that region of bone to die.

Platelet-rich plasma (prp) to treat chronic upper patellar tendinopathies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Upper patellar tendinopathies remain often chronic and rebel to a thorough conservative treatment. Moreover, the option of a surgical treatment could be disappointing. New treatments are being developed. Injection of PRP is one of these. Platelets contain lot of growth factors which would have the potentiality to enhance the healing process of tendons. Even if in vitro and animal experiments have demonstrated this stimulation of tendon healing process,(1) clinical series are subject to controversy.

Platelet-rich Plasma Promotes Healing of Osteoporotic Fractures.

Orthopedics. 2013 Jun 1;36(6):e687-94. doi: 10.3928/01477447-20130523-10.

With an aging population worldwide, the frequency of osteoporotic fractures is increasing. Therefore, biological methods to enhance the internal fixation of osteoporotic fractures becomes more important to reduce the societal burden of care. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the role of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of osteoporotic fractures and to clarify the best concentration of PRP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
Recently an articular cartilage repair has been given much attention in the orthopaedic field. Cartilage regeneration capacity is very limited. Optimal approach seems to be a delivery of natural growth factors. Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains proliferative and chemoattractant growth factors. The objective of the present study was to determine if PRP can increase tibiofemoral cartilage regeneration and improve knee function.

Practical guidelines for using PRP in the orthopaedic office

By Santos F. Martinez, MD
The use of biologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), mesenchymal stem cells, or growth factors in the orthopaedic office setting is becoming more common, fueled, in part, by a growing body of research and increasing market demand for alternative methods of nonsurgical management of soft-tissue and musculoskeletal conditions.

High-concentrate PRP Promotes Healing in Long-Bone Nonunions

Terry Stanton
A study of patients with nonunited fractures of long bones found that injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) enhanced the rate of union, demonstrated by definitive radiographic evidence of healing.
The study, “Platelet Concentrate in Treatment of Non Union of Long Bones,” was conducted by Vijay Kumar, MD; Anjan Trikha, MD; and Rajesh Malhotra, MS, who presented the results. It was conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India.

Haynes: Blazers G Wesley Matthews Received PRP Injection In Ankle

Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com reports that Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews told reporters on Friday that he received a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection in his right ankle this offseason.

Matthews shut down his 2012-13 season early after he sprained his right ankle.
