Braves All-Star reliever Jonny Venters is attempting to come back from his second Tommy John surgery. The latest news in his recovery is that he has received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his surgically-repaired elbow by famed surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
The good news here is Andrews said the elbow but structurally sound and the injection is to help ease the discomfort Venters has been experiencing in his throwing program.
“The MRI looked good,” Venters said (ajc.com). “There's a little bit of flexor strain in there, so I ended up getting a PRP shot. So everything's good. I'm just going to take some time and let that ligament mature a little more and start throwing here in a little bit.”
Venters had his first Tommy John surgery back in 2006. He was able to work his way back and make his major-league debut at age 25 in the majors. In his first two years for the Braves, he was outstanding, combining for a 1.89 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 189 strikeouts in 171 innings. He made the All-Star team in 2011 as he established himself as one of the best lefty relievers in the game.
He regressed a bit in 2012 as he battled elbow injuries and in the middle of May last season, Venters underwent his second Tommy John surgery.
Recently, he's attempting to work his way back via a throwing program, but has dealt with discomfort in the elbow.
