Boston Red Sox Clay Buchholz receives PRP injection after second opinion

HOUSTON – Red Sox righthander Clay Buchholz received a second opinion on his strained right flexor tendon from Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday.
The result of the visit was Buchholz receiving a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection.
It was the same diagnosis that Red Sox team doctor, Dr. Peter Asnis gave Buchholz, but Buchholz opted to get a second opinion before getting the injection.

"The diagnosis was consistent," manager John Farrell said on Wednesday. "And at the time Clay was examined in Boston, no ligament issues, still the same flexor tendon area. At the time there was discussion of a PRP injection, which he opted not to go through. Then upon the second opinion today, the diagnosis was still consistent but Dr. Andrews talked to Dr. Asnis back here. Again, he recommended a PRP injection so as of today, Clay did go ahead with that injection."
The timetable for Buchholz's return will be pushed back to determine whether the injection helps heal the tendon.
Red Sox righthander Brandon Workman received a PRP injection from Andrewsearlier this season, but the injection didn't help and he later underwent Tommy John surgery.

"There's going to be a little bit of a shutdown time now as a result, which is consistent with a PRP injection," Farrell said of Buchholz. "The total time with that is, the total time of shutdown is yet to be determined. But as he's been playing light catch of late, that will now be stopped."
Farrell said he still anticipates Buchholz pitching again this season, but of course that remains uncertain.

"To say there's a definitive timeline on when he puts a ball back in his hand is yet to be determined and that will be at further recommendation of Andrews, and as we get all the information and continue to put it together," Farrell said.
