KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Righthander Asher Wojciechowski has returned to
Houston for a platelet-rich-plasma injection as he continues recovery
from a strained right lat muscle.
“I’m here just to get a PRP injection in my lat to help the healing process,” Wojciechowski said. “It’s supposed to help with the recovery time.”
Wojciechowski said he was slated to return to Florida on Thursday evening.
Wojciechowski went for a second MRI on the lat on Monday, after first suffering the injury Feb. 1 while throwing a bullpen.
… Japhet Amador’s imminent arrival in Astros camp after it appeared he could leave the organization was positive news to Porter, who has an open first-base competition. Amador did not report to Astros camp on time because of his ill, pregnant wife, his agent said.
“That’s definitely a good thing,” Porter said. “Obviously, he had to tend to some family issues. We’re excited that he’s going to be able to come here and compete for the first-base job, and I look forward to getting him here and talking to him just making sure everything is OK on the home front.”
Amador’s competitors for the job include Marc Krauss, Jesus Guzman, Brett Wallace and Jonathan Singleton.
… The Astros have an early end to their day Wednesday and a late start on Thursday by design.
… Porter was asked twice about outfielder Preston Tucker. The response both times: “He can hit.” He then elaborated: “He was one of those guys that I kind of put an asterisk next to I was excited to have him here at camp.” Tucker hit 25 home runs with a combined .297 average last season across two levels in the minors.
… With the team’s first game set for Friday, Porter acknowledged that the intensity will be raised a notch, and he said he’s relying on his veterans to keep the kids from letting the game speed up on them. “You’re going to start to be judged even that much more closely because you’re competing against someone else,” he said, “(never mind) the competition that’s taking place on our team (internally).”
Porter said he’s going to make an effort to keep units together that may normally play as a unit: i.e. playing infielders next to the other infields whom you would expect they’d be next to.
